Local SEO and Google Business Profile

Three positions on a mapdecide most localbuying decisions.

When somebody searches for a local service, Google shows three businesses on a map above everything else. Getting into that block is a separate discipline from ordinary SEO, and for most local businesses it matters more.

Overview

Traditional SEO is about ranking in the blue links. Local SEO is about the map block that sits above them, and the two are decided by substantially different factors. A business can rank first organically and be invisible in the map results, which is a common and expensive situation.

Proximity is the factor nobody mentions

Google weights local results heavily by how close your business is to the person searching. This has a blunt consequence: visibility tends to fade with distance from your own address, no matter how good the rest of your optimization is.

It also means "we rank number one" is close to a meaningless claim unless somebody specifies where the searcher was standing. Any agency reporting local rankings without a location attached is either not measuring properly or hoping you will not ask.

Your primary category does more than you think

The single category you select on your Google Business Profile has an outsized effect on which searches you appear for, and a surprising number of businesses have it set to something almost right rather than right. This is one of the cheapest and most frequently overlooked fixes available.

Service area businesses have different rules

If you travel to customers rather than receiving them, your profile should be configured as a service area business with the address hidden and your service areas listed. Getting this wrong is extremely common, and it quietly limits visibility. We check it before anything else.

Reviews are a ranking factor, not just a trust signal

Volume, rating and recency all feed into local rankings as well as into whether anybody clicks when you appear. Recent reviews count for more than old ones, so this has to be an ongoing habit rather than a one time push before a busy season.

Consistency across the web

Your name, address and phone number should match everywhere they appear online. Old listings with a previous address or a disconnected number actively work against you, and most businesses that have been trading a while have several they have long forgotten about.

Real pages for real places

A genuine page for each community you serve helps, provided each one has an actual reason to exist. The same page with the town name swapped is recognised immediately by search engines and reads badly to any human who opens two of them.

What is included

What the workactually involves.

Profile optimization

Categories, services, attributes, hours, photos and posts. Configured properly and then actually maintained.

Service area setup

If customers do not come to you, the profile type must reflect that or your reach is capped.

Review programs

A repeatable way to ask satisfied customers, plus monitoring and drafted responses.

Citation cleanup

Consistent details across directories, with stale and duplicate listings tracked down and fixed.

Location pages

A real page per community you serve, each with its own reason to exist.

Rankings measured by location

Grid based reporting that shows where you appear, not a single number with no context.

Common questions

Questions weget asked a lot.

How is this different from regular SEO?

Regular SEO targets the standard results. Local SEO targets the map block above them, which is decided largely by your profile, your proximity to the searcher, and your reviews. Most local businesses need both, but the map usually produces enquiries faster.

We have no storefront. Can we still rank locally?

Yes. That is what a service area business profile is for. You hide the address and declare the areas you cover. It is worth confirming yours is set up that way, because a great many are not.

How long does it take?

Profile and citation work can show movement within weeks, which makes this one of the faster things we do. Review volume and competitive categories take longer.
